Pharmacology is the study of how drugs work by interacting with biomolecules within living cells to produce their effects. This activity primarily involves the nervous system (brain, spinal cord). The central nervous system (CNS), incorporates nerve cells or neurons; glial cells; and other specialized cell types (e.g. Satellite cells). Pharmacology is defined as the study of drugs and their interactions with living systems. The scope of pharmacology includes the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms of action; drug metabolism, transport and disposition; functional drug studies; comparative aspects of metabolism, transport and disposition among species or within a species for a given drug or group of drugs.; the quantitative analysis of cellular, subcellular and molecular components by techniques such as membrane-radioal labeling, electrophoresis, nucleic acid hybridization, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. An important component of pharmacology is pharmacokinetics. This concerns how substances enter organisms, move through them and are eliminated from the body as waste products. Pharmacokinetics deals with the fate of drugs in living organisms, including what happens to them after they are consumed by the patient. Pharmacokinetics deals with the discharge of drugs into the gastric tube (such as oral, rectal or parenteral), before they get into blood circulation. Pharmacodynamics is concerned with the effects that drugs have on biological systems. For example, dopamine antagonist drugs block dopamine receptors thereby inhibiting stimulatory activity in an organ or tissue that is regulated by dopamine stimulation.
